The Snow Day Give Back

I remember as a kid going to bed the night of a snowstorm, praying to hear those two magic words: snow day.

I would pray, do every trick in the book, and watch the weather forecast for hours, hoping it would all end in my favor.

Now, with school being virtual for our students, those words are not as anticipated.

Or so we thought.

Coach André received a call from a friend at Habitat for Humanity Paterson, needing a helping hand. As an organization that builds homes in the community, they had streets full of houses needing to be shoveled, and simply not enough volunteers.

The text went out to a few groups of kids, both currently and formerly in our programs. It wasn’t as glamorous as reading your school’s name on the bottom of the television screen, but it did express a need in the community and the opportunity for our kids to make a difference.

Tuesday afternoon, after the last snowflake landed in Paterson, our kids showed up.

Not just one or two.

But 30.

30 S2S kids, who could have been sledding or playing video games, chose to spend their afternoon shoveling for those in need in their community.

“It felt like a family reunion”, says Coach AndrĂ©. “Kids that we haven’t seen in years came out of the woodworks for this project!”

And when we asked them why they would give up their time to help, their answer was simple: to give back.

From all of us at Street2Street, thank you.

Your generosity is the example our kids are following.

Until they all Play, Belong, & Matter.
